Historic Resources in Georgia can be identified through a state-wide survey program that collects and records information about existing historic buildings within a city and/or county. The information is compiled on a “Historic Resources Survey Form” and entered into a computer database. This information serves as a valuable planning tool in assessing historic resources as well as planning for their preservation.
In the NEGRDC region, all the member counties have been surveyed. Most of these surveys, however, were completed in the mid-1970s and are outdated. The following counties and/or cities have completed updated surveys (since 1989):
- Madison County
- Jasper County
- Newton County
- City of Winterville
- Oglethorpe County
All completed survey information is available for research or review at the NEGRDC.
The survey program provides limited funding to local governments and/or non-profit organizations interested in completing a survey. Funding must be matched and supported by a local sponsor, usually the local government or a historical society. Applications for funding are typically due in early spring. Cities or counties interested in undertaking a historic resources survey can contact the Preservation Planner bwalker@negrdc.org for further information or contact the state’s survey coordinator (http://www.gashpo.org).
